When is the season for the Alta Via and the Tour du Mont Blanc?
Hut-to-hut walking in the Dolomites and the Aosta Valley is a summer activity: most huts open from around mid to late June until September (dates vary by hut — confirm before you go). July and August are the busiest months and bring frequent afternoon thunderstorms; early summer can leave old snow on the high cols, and September is quieter with shorter days.
When should I walk Selvaggio Blu or the Via degli Dei?
Spring and autumn. Summer heat makes long exposed days hard — Selvaggio Blu has no water on the route — while autumn brings the heaviest rain events of the year, when the Civil Protection alert level matters.
Do I need a permit?
None of these treks needs a walking permit. Book huts and village accommodation ahead in season, and check park rules (wild camping is restricted in the national and nature parks). Local access rules — such as regulated car access to Lago di Braies in high season or regulated access to some Sardinian coves — change, so confirm them before you go.
What number do I call in an emergency?
112, the European emergency number, reaches police, ambulance and mountain rescue (Soccorso Alpino) anywhere in Italy; 118 is also answered for medical emergencies. Give your route, the nearest hut, pass or cove, and your phone battery level.
Do you show avalanche danger?
Yes, but only the official level published by the regional avalanche services through the EAWS (South Tyrol, Veneto, Aosta Valley). We never estimate avalanche danger from a weather model: outside the bulletin season the page says "No bulletin, season starts December".
How is the Italy trek score calculated?
Each route is scored 0–100 from hourly forecasts at every waypoint, corrected to its real altitude. Six factors are combined: wind, storms and cloud on the high crossing; snow on the cols with the official avalanche danger; rain against the Italian landslide rainfall threshold for the region (Peruccacci et al. 2017); trail weather including heat; views; and the road or rail approach including official strikes. Orange and red official warnings and credible reported closures cap the score. 80+ is Excellent, 65+ Good, 50+ Fair, 35+ Poor and below 35 Avoid.
