Route

Stages & altitudes

Italy's hardest trek: a trackless line along the limestone cliffs of the Gulf of Orosei from Pedra Longa, over the Punta Giradili headland, past Cala Goloritzé, Cala Mariolu and Cala Sisine to Cala Luna, with climbing, abseils and bivouacs. There are no huts and no water; most parties go with a local guide who caches water. Weather risk is heat, wind on the exposed ridges, thunderstorms, and slick rock and rockfall after rain.

Hourly forecasts for every waypoint, corrected to real altitude, feed six factors: wind, storms and cloud on the high crossing; snow on the cols with the official avalanche danger level; rain against the Italian landslide rainfall threshold (Peruccacci et al. 2017); trail weather including heat; views; and the road or rail approach including official transport strikes. Orange and red official warnings and credible reported closures cap the score.
